IMHO NFS will provide enough secure connection. Especially if this will 
be in network core subnet.

Anyway, IMHO for these rare hardware it'll be better to use old 3.1 
distro - due to lesser memory usage. For 2.6.32 it'll be good to have 
64M RAM or more. And 64M RAM for 486 is practically impossible thing.
Also, now we compile all for i686 platform (PPro/PII or higher) which 
have much fresher BIOS. And I don't sure that it's actual to assemble 
LEAFv4 even for P1 - it'll give performance drop comparing to i686 
build, but may be reasonable only for hardware like Geode boards (for 
others - it'll be better to take some PIII/PII PC, and forget headache 
with memory and devices compatibility).
