Thanks for the link

I have a basic question. Even if I install snmp daemon (snmpd.lrp) and is
running on the LRP firewall, Should I change the settings
SNMP_BLOCK =YES to NO

I thought its use is to Block all SNMP traffic going through the firewall.
If I am only interested in a snmp daemon running on the firewall itself
which needs to be monitored from an outside network, should I need it.
and what is SNMP_MANAGER. Should I type the external ip address of the
firewall itself.
(Please correct me if I am wrong)

While going through the mailing list archives, I came accross come
contradictary postings like asking to enable
EXTERN_TCP_PORTS="0/0_snmp"
EXTERN_UDP_PORTS="0/0_snmp" and some one was saying that as SNMP is a UDP
protocol stuff, only EXTERN_UDP_PORTS entry is
only required.

Next is regarding the snmpd.conf

I am hearing people asking us to change the snmp community string "public"
to some other strings which is not easily guessable. For that if I change
all references of public in snmpd.conf to something is enough ?

How can I add a private read only community string in snmpd.conf ? any
examples?

Thanks
Madhu

I've been happily using the snmp package from Koon Wong's package archive.
You can find it in various spots around the 'net, or in the contents of my
CD images:
