Silly me!  I never noticed that logger is included:

        log () {
                FAC=mail
                PRI=notice
                STR="$user => [$envelopes]: $subject"
                TAG="`basename $0`[$$]"
                logger -p ${FAC}.${PRI} -t ${TAG} ${STR}
        }
