AFAIK, ifdown is just a script that calls other init scripts to bring down an interface (similar to doing "net ifdown eth0). Since the init scritps cannot currently release a DHCP lease, I don't think ifdown will help you. If there's an actual ifdown program (not a shell-script), I'm unaware of, please point me to it and I can probably compile it for Dachstein/LEAF. The ifdown scritp on my RedHat systems here just do a bit of house-keeping and call the main init scripts that bring interfaces up/down.
