I have also had your problems with changes to root.  I usually just take the
easy way out and add the contents of /root to the local package, and backup
local.  To do this, just add "root" to /var/lib/lrpkg/local.list (for full
backups) and/or "I root" to /var/lib/lrpkg/local.local (for partial
backups).
