I had a thought about why our Dell box wouldn't boot Dachstein from the CD
whereas it would boot Windows XP. It was triggered by Charles' comment about
the type of CD.
I recall a discussion on another list about problems installing Linux on
Dell boxes. The cause in that case was the tendency for Dell to install
CD-ROM drives using cable select. Apparently some versions of RedHat won't
recognise cable select CD-ROM drives, so I wondered if this might be the
cause. The drive is definitely an IDE CD-ROM.
I haven't had a chance to test this hypothesis as the box is in and working
on Dachstein Floppy and I won't have the opportunity to play with it for a
while. I will post to the list when I have investigated.
