Leaf-user added back in. More support resources and it gets archived.
:)

I had an Eigerstein, and then a Eigerstein2BETA on 24x7 providing web
and email services for (geez) 2-3 years...(?) until I moved, [offline
for the last 6 months (sigh)] without getting successfully hacked.
There was a LOT in the logs, a few DOS attacks, but nothing ever got
through. I did have locked down and secured servers behind the firewall
but as I was providing services I did have ports open (trivia quiz: 21,
25, 80, 443, hmmm...and 22). I do not believe that there has been a
reported incident of a successfully hacked 'stein series distribution.
I suspect that Oxygen and the others are the same. (I really need to
write up and submit a testimonial)

If you are NOT providing web, ftp or an email server AND you have virus
protection, don't load warez or open unknown attachments, then you
really should be quite safe. With the built in DMZ support, if you
decide to experiment with the above mentioned services, you add another
layer.

Keep in mind that if grc's scanner can see a stealth'd port, that means
more advanced tools can see it as well. If a port is closed, then all
that means is that it is closed and will NOT respond to requests on that
port.

On the fortunate side, if you are effectively firewalled, then the worst
is generally the automated script-kiddie scans that just occur with
regularity and are annoying, but if you didn't have firewall logs, you
wouldn't even know about them.

Oh yes, I can't say enough about the upside of a good UPS!

Have fun and happy networking. I have installed these at a number of
friends and family. members. Some of the list folks use them in far
more complex environments.

Subject: RE: [Leaf-user] UPNP port problem

Hi Steven
I'm concerned about leaving this box turned on for any
long periods of time for fear of being hacked. As I
stated I'm a newbie and I'm not sure what can be
hacked through this port. I also plan to install this
at all of my family's homes once I get it down.
