I use routerst.lrp  on a internal net
http://www.digitech.org/~tjunkie/routerst 
The disadvantage is it has to run as root, advantage you can also 
executes scripts to perform tasks on your router. 
(for example I use it to remotely connect or hangup a connection if 
it has to be done manually).
The security problems apply the same as with other insecure 
connections. (everybody who has acces to this network and is not 
blocked by the firewall can perform these tasks.
