Hi Henry, thanks for the response! ----- Original Message ----- From: "HENRY PSENICKA" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Cc: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Tuesday, May 14, 2002 3:37 PM Subject: Bering RC2 and Orinoco wireless 8.10 firmware
| Brock, | | We have been using the Orinoco 8.10 firmware with RH7.2, as well as Bering | Beta4 and RC2 without any problems related to the firmware (that we know | of). I'm on the RC2 myself and agree that the firmware seems to be fine. Unfortunately I haven't had all the gear available to work it very hard! | We do not use power management features, so I can't offer suggestions in | that regard, but I am curious why you would want it. In our case we | specifically disabled power management features in the BIOS. Well, I don't have a true AP, so I'm using the ad-hoc, or peer-to-peer, mode of the cards. I notice that they are constantly active. The firewall card flickers constantly even when there is no other card in range. When a connection is made with a notebook for instance, this flickering continues. After reviewing the man page for iwconfig, it appears that I should be able to set a sleep time, wake time etc. to go into effect when data is not flowing. This is my first experience with these cards so I could be off base here! I had hoped to put this into effect and thus force the cards to be a little more quiet. However, setting the parameters works only for the first sleep period. When the card wakes, it stays that way. I saw a notation somewhere that this function was in fact broken with the later firmware versions. | As for firmware releases, you can find the older releases at | ftp://ftp.wavelan.com/pub/software/ORiNOCO/PC_Card/Firmware/. Thanks for that. I'll have a dig through the stuff there. | I usually watch www.orinocowireless.com for new releases. | | I have not tried a downgrade, but the way the firmware upgrade utility | normally works, I would be surprised if this was a problem. In case you | haven't tried this yourself... firmware upgrades must be done using a | Windows driver and OS. No worries, I've successfully done the upgrades from 6.04 and earlier to 8.1 with a win2k laptop. | BTW, we have had a few hiccups with wireless transmissions using RC2 that | seem to go away when using Beta4. Have you seen any similar strange | behaviours? We suspect antenna alignment issues may be at least partly to | blame (this is a 3km outdoor point-to-point link) so we are looking into | that at the moment. What do you mean by hiccups? I have had some involvement with Breezecom frequency hopping cards and have seen a few unusual things there. The main issue was ping times going through the roof if association was lost briefly. These links were also outdoor point to point at least as long as you are doing. If you could describe things a little more, I'll take note of what mine does. We were also suspicious that wind causing the antennas to sway might have been a problem also, but never were able to prove this. It just seemed odd that problems occurred when the wind blew! | Hope this helps... Yep! Brock _______________________________________________________________ Have big pipes?
