Sorry -- I should have read further before adding that part of my reply. 
I'm assuming that you are using the default Bering installation of 
Shorewall. 

For accessing SSH and WWW servers behind the firewall, the QuickStart 
Guide still gives you a good overview of how to do simple Shorewall 
configuration. The QuickStart Guide can be found at:

http://www.shorewall.net/shorewall_quickstart_guide.htm.

There is a FAQ (http://www.shorewall.net/FAQ.htm) that deals with pinging 
through a Shorewall firewall.
