Here's the latest:

I followed Jacques' instructions for building a Bering kernel including all 
the patches.

With IDE compiled in, there was no change, but when I compiled the kernel 
using the 'old hard disk drivers' mentioned in ide.txt, it all works fine. I 
think it's possible to get the 'enhanced' drivers to work, but life's too 
short and this setup is likely to be rare.
