Well, I ended up using Free FDISK to put a DOS MBR on the drive, as I couldn't get the win98 fdisk to put a new MBR on the hard drive (strange). It works so I now have other problems to address now like why WISP refuses to set my prism card in master mode, but no magical syslinux incantations would get the box to boot syslinux's supposed MBR that it installs. Oh well. Chalk it up to BillG and the hard drive kieretsu's. Thanks for all the suggestions...
