That did the trick, Tom.  Thanks for the quick reply!  Now I'm certain
the socks5.lrp problem is related to that and very similar to resolve.

Just add this rule to /etc/shorewall/rules (and back up Shorewall):

ACCEPT  fw      net     tcp     80
