Although I have almost no experience running any Cisco hardware, I would
have to say that for the basic routing that most companies are probably
doing, the LEAF project works quite nicely. Even when you get into advanced
routing and bridging and so forth, LEAF still stands up. If you were going
into a meeting were you were already up against Cisco (hardware in general)
then you should really be asking, what does Cisco equipment do, that the
LEAF project can't, and how does it apply to your business's networking
operations.

I have 3 locations currently running LEAF firewalls/routers and am using
IPSec between all three, and in the next couple of months I'll be adding to
additional locations, bringing our WAN access points to a total of 5.
Granted I don't really do a lot of 'advanced routing' but then again, how
much advanced routing will you really be doing. Since discovering the LEAF
project, and assuming the hardware is supported, I can't see a need for any
Cisco equipment in our future.

My opinion is barely even my own, and should be taken with two grains of
salt, one for you to remember me by, the other for you to throw away...

Subject: [leaf-user] LEAF -vs- Cisco...what's YOUR opinion?

Hi folks,
I read the article in last month's Linux Journal about LEAF -vs- Cisco
but unfortunately, I don't think they came to any real conclusions. I
was particularly interested because I would like to use LEAF (Bering in
particular) at my company (and I was hoping the article would provide
some credible statistics)...but I'm afraid management will sneer and
"poo-poo" my decision to implement it. I think they feel, like I'm sure
other businesses feel, that because they've heard their competitor Brand
X uses a Cisco router (oooh, ahhh), that it MUST be the smart thing to
do. So, I thought I would ask so many of you who probably know both of
these products like the "back of your hand", and probably use them on a
daily basis. So...how DOES Linux/LEAF compare to Cisco? Do you think
that Linux/LEAF can handle most business scenarios? I know Charles says
that he uses Dachstein at his businesses. What do you think are its
limitations? Other comments? Thank you as always.

Craig
