I am a dork... I had read that but it never registered... DOH!

Added the option and it worked fine.  I am able to grab the static IP
address that I specify in the command line, but am unable to make it into
the outside world.  I was however able to ping other IP addresses on the
same subnet, as well as ping IPs that are connected via IPSec.  I intend to
play with it more tonight.  I'll post some more questions later tonight I'm
sure...

I hope you are reading the pppd manpage, and the PPP-HOWTO.

I think you need "noauth".
