I mount it to edit sysconfig.cfg, lrpkg.cfg or copy misc lrps which can be
used on demand from the same media. As an alternative, if editing of
syslinux.cfg, lrpkg.cfg is given in lrcfg, it would obviate the need for
mounting.

Why would you leave it mounted except when copying files or loading
programs?  Even if you boot off CD, it is wise to not leave it mounted.
  It could have programs on it that could be useful to someone who got
access.

Since the boot media is only used at boot and backup - it should stay
umounted.  I believe lrcfg should give you an error message if the
backup media is already mounted.
