You can manually set the I/O ports and interrupts on the 3c509s using
3com's 3c5x9cfg.exe DOS utility.  My experience has been that kicking
the 509's out of PnP mode and setting the I/O port and interrupt
values to known available values eliminates tons o' headaches.

I can't remember which of the two disk images contains the utility,
but I think either 3c509x1.exe or 3c509x2.exe at
http://www.3com.com/products/en_US/result.jsp?selected=5&sort=effdt&sku=3C509B&order=desc
should have it.  If you're feeling brave, a google search will turn
up just the 3c5x9cfg.exe utility available for download at a few
places.  Good luck.
