Hmmm ... the message is about the tulip module. I don't know what you have there as tulip.o, but I doubt it is the right thing, since 245 bytes is way too small for a working NIC module (my copy of tulip.o on my Debian workstation, kernel 2.4.17, is 49120 bytes -- I don't have Bering running here to check its tulip.o directly). You might see if you actually downloaded a text file that contains an error message about the download, though that's just a guess.
