I've just starting trying to implement a firewall with Bering andWell ... since the "ip addr" command is supposed to list all interfaces, not just configured ones (you learn something new every day!), it would appear that you are missing your external and internal interfaces (probably eth0 and eth1, but you haven't actually said). I seem to be stuck at the most basic step. I have created a bootable floppy
and configured that network interface following the instructions in the
Installation guide. To start with, I'm trying to bring Bering up on my
desktop system, but I can't get the network to start. I try both of the
example eth0 configurations in interfaces file, but neither seems to work.
When the system boots, /sbin/ip addr only lists lo and dummy0. What am I missing?
A. what NICs you are using
B. what module you are attempting to use with each
C. whether each module is actually in /lib/modules
D. whether you have an entry for each module in /etc/modules
E for each modules, what happens if you enter "insmod module.o" (replacing "module.o" with the actual module name) at the command line.
F. If my assumption that both interfaces are NICs is wrong, what are your internal and external interfaces (e.g., ppp dial-up)?
As a general matter, you should also read through the SR FAQ (link below). If you have further questions, it will help you include the info we need to troubleshoot without having to do too much guessing.
