Also, socks uses unencrypted userid/password authentication (see http://www.socks.nec.com/socksfaq.html, item 24). In a situation where the operator is concerned about unaothorized to the LAN, this is weak security.
In my earlier response, I was thinking of supporting direct access to the Internet with authentication, not proxy-based access.
