Ok here's the story:

I spent all day puting together this giant text file
with various logs and files and results of
experiments. Then I found this posting in the mailing
list archives that said to download a "normal" kernal
from
http://lrp.steinkuehler.net/files/kernels/Dachstein-normal/
. So I downloaded the upx file, re-named it linux and
replaced the linux file on my floppy with this new one
and...when I echo "hello" to /dev/ttyS0 I don't get an
error message. I'm taking this as a good sign. Also in
the boot-up messages I see these two lines:
ttyS00 at 0x03f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A
ttyS01 at 0x02f8 (irq = 3) is a 16550A

Perhaps I should post exactly what I did so anyone
else searching the archives (like me after I forget in
6 months) can easily find and solve this problem.

1.) Go to
http://lrp.steinkuehler.net/files/kernels/Dachstein-normal/
2.) download linux-2.2.19-3-LEAF-normal.zImage.upx
(i didn't need IDE or IPSec, your milage may vary)
3.) rename it to "linux"
4.) copy it to your working leaf disk, overwriting the
existing linux file. (now re-boot leaf)

I am using the dachstein floppy edition via
"dachstein-v1.0.2-1680.exe".

This seems a much better solution than trying to make
the stupid serial.o file work.

Now it's just a question of installing pppd and having
it assign an IP over the serial port. If anybody would
like to save me a few hours time please post some good
guides (I don't seem very good at finding them) this
would be very much appreciated. Isn't there a "get
pppd working in 10 steps or less" that doesn't involve
some out dated text file? I just put pppd at the end
of my lrp= line and reboot?

Thank you for your help and patience everyone.

bye
Keith
