I've used a CD, floppy, DoM, DoC and CF. While DoM, CF and DoC work well, in
easy deployment scenarios, CF scores over the rest.

My experience has been the best with a CF reader drive and CF (cold plug
though). I bought a IDE-CF convertor which was a PCB version, rigged it up
to jut out from the PC and used it to plug in and out CFs without having to
open up the machine.

Later, I found that CF readers are available in 3 1/2" drive formats for
$19! less than what I paid for my convertor (http://mydigitaldiscounts.com).
I've now rigged up a system with a Floppy drive, Hard disk and a PCMCIA
drive with a PCMCIA CF sleeve. The disk has LEAF installed as hda1 and the
card drive is hdc1. I can boot DOS from floppy, fdisk and format the CF, use
another partition editor to mark hdc1 as bootable (fdisk allows marking only
primary master as bootable if it exists), execute syslinux, copy the files
from c: to d: and I have a LEAF CF ready to go.

Cheapest (and easily available) is most probably a CD.
For a Desktop I would recommend a DOM unless you have a DoC socket on your
motherboard.
