It's probably a DOS thing. Countless times I've used DOS to put packages onto the HD or even mount a DOS floppy to copy over modules. DOS of course is limited to the 8.3 file naming convention and truncates with the tilde and number.

I think the key is that line that says > Insmod: ide-pr~1.o: No module by that name found You should probably verify the package names are not mangled and that you typed everything correctly. If you want, once you copy the files to the IDE drive, I guess its /dev/hda1, you can mount -t msdos /dev/hda1 /mnt ls -l /mnt/boot/lib/modules cat /mnt/boot/etc/modules and paste the output in here so we can see the filenames, dates, sizes, code....
