Hello!
Thanks to the help provided by Ray Olszewski it has become obvious that my secondary IP addresses on my external interface are not working properly.
I have a static IP of 206.127.76.231/27 for my primary IP on my Dachstein box. I have also been assigned the block of 206.127.77.48/28 (14 useable IP's). They are being routed correctly by my ISP, but my Dach box does not reply to ping requests on that range of IP's.
Lynn and Charles are giving you good advice. Let me add one small bit -- when you say the 206.127.77.48/28 addresses are "being routed correctly by my ISP", that doesn't mean anything, because "correctly" is not well defined. You need to understand *how* your ISP is routing these addreses in a bit more detail. Specifically, is your "main" IP address (206.127.76.231/27) the ISP's route to this "extra" network, or does your ISP expect these 14 addresses to be directly available on the interface it is providing to you?
If the second, you *probably* only have 13 addresses available, not 14, because one of them will be *that* network's gateway address. But more likely, your ISP is using the first approach ... in that case, I **think** (it's been awhile since I looked at this, and I've never actually done it) you can use the 2.2.x kernel's ability to do "static NAT" (part of "policy routing") to connect these addresses to your internal machines, then use standard ipchains rules (not port forwarding) to limit incoming access to the pcAnywhere ports.
Until we know, though, any suggestions any of us make are really guesswork and could be well off target. Just to be clear, the eventual answer to this question is governed by the routing table your ISP uses, not anything that you have direct control over ...you simply have to ask the ISP and get a coherent answer to this question (or get your ISP to do it the way you want).
