I'm not sure if this is a problem with Bering, PopTop (pptpd.lrp) or shorewall. Anyway, I'm running Bering 1.1 and modified pptpd.lrp files accordingly. I've been able to get VPN working from one site but today I tried to log back on testing out some other things and it refused my connection saying that it closed the protocol or something to that effect. So I went over to the site today and logged onto the firewall then ran /etc/init.d/shorewall restart and it was fine again. Should I just ignore this one instance until I run into the problem again or does anyone else have better insight as to what happened?

Given the above skimpy description, how could we? If this should happen again, you might consider collecting some hard information:

a) The exact error message you were receiving (other than "...it closed the protocol or something").
b) Capture the output of "shorewall status" before and after you restart Shorewall.
c) Save yourself some typing and type "shorewall restart" rather than invoking the SysVInit script to do the same thing.
d) Capture the output from your log that pppd and pptpd produced during the failed login attempts.

See http://www.shorewall.net/support.htm for details on the information we need to troubleshoot Shorewall problems.
