My router is AT form factor and I have no keyboard for it. Not a problem as I just boot the Bering disk on another system(of course I can't ssh in until I get Bering working). Is it possible to mount and edit the floppy directly on my Debian box or is booting it the only way to edit it? Thanks again.
Depends on what you want to edit. The *.lrp (package) files are just .tgz files in disguise, though as I recall they do need to -9 flag on gzip when you recompress them after editing. So you should be able to un'tar, edit, and re'tar them fairly easily on another Linux host (or even a suitably equipped Windows host), as long as its kernel can mount an msdos filesystem and a 1680 MB disk.
The kernel itself (linux), of course, can't be edited this way, but you already know that. Similarly, syslinux itself is a binary. syslinux.cfg is just a text file, easy to edit anywhere you can mount the disk (just be sure not to intruduce an unwanted newline).
initrd.lrp is a special case, though, and someone else is going to have to tell you what to do about it.
Personally, I think that doing the edits this way, while possible, make things a lot harder. You lose the functionality of the LEAF setup scripts. Adapters to connect PS/2 keyboards to the oldstyle DIN-5 AT-style ports are cheap (so are AT-style keyboards, at swap meets and the like), and I suspect you'd find the money well spent.
Or ... booting the LEAF disk on different hardware long enough to do a configuration is probably easier than trying to edit the files after mounting the disk on a different Linux system. This is what you say you are doing now, right? (Or am I misreading that part?) What are you finding unsatisfactory about that approach? It slows down things like module testing (where you are checking that the configuration works with the target hardware) ... but so does editing on a Debian system.
