Steve's last comment makes me think that, despite all this duscission, we haven't managed to clarify what PPPoE is.
PPPoE = PPP Over Ethernet. Ethernet frames are used to encapsulate PPP whatevers

For what Steve actually wants to do, I'd look at eithe IPSec or ssh tunneling. Or maybe PPTP.
Can I IPSEC to an existing interface ? Reading material for doing this ?
