Here is my syslinux.cfg. It works fine with a CF i have installed.

display syslinux.dpy timeout 0  default linux initrd=initrd.lrp
syst_size=12M init=/linuxrc rw root=/dev/ram0 boot=/dev/hda1:msdos
PKGPATH=/dev/hda1 LRP=root,etc,local,modules,iptables,shorwall,ulogd,weblet


Also check that the disk is installed correctly. Once i installed the CF
adapter to the wrong IDE coonector and i got some similar messages.
Since the hdd could not be found Bering was trying the fdd or something like
that. Its been sometime know i don't recall exactly the messages.
