Ray and Charles:
I turned the iptables fw off on the red hat box, and am now able to ping and browse w/mozilla, but only by ip rather than name resolution.
Hmmm ... I'm curious about this result. Since you had no firewalling in place on the RH host, based on your prior report (which showed only default ACCEPT policies), what did you "turn off"?
Next addressable problem - DNS. Just by your suggestions and my meager knowledge, I was able to get by this first hurdle. Thanks again.
Oh yeah, if anyone has any suggestions concerning how to get the rh box to use name resolution, please feel free to comment.
First, what is currently in /etc/resolv.conf on the RH host? Are there addresses in it that point to valid nameservers ... either on-LAN and able to forward requests to off-LAN servers, or directly to off-LAN servers (perhaps provided by your ISP)? If not, adding them may by itself be enough to solve your problem, and you can skip the rest of this.
Second, how does the RH host resolve "firewall"? Did you use /etc/hosts for this or is it doing some on-LAN DNS resolution? (I saw it use "firewall" in your listing of your routing table, which implies it was able to do a reverse lookup of 192.168.1.254 somehow.)
Third, how do the Windows hosts do name resolution?
Fourth, are you running either dnscache or tinydns on the Dach router?
Bottom line: We can probably help you with this problem, but not in a vacuum. We need to know what DNS servers are available to you in order to tell you how to use them.
