I'm not sure. If serial.o is listed when you run 'lsmod', you should have serial port support.
Some comments indicate that serial support is built into the normal kernel, but how do I convert the .....zImage.upx file to a disk image or how do I replace just the kernel, if that is an option?
Just copy the ....zImage.upx file to the file 'linux' on your floppy disk (or other boot media). You may have to replace any kernel modules you're using, as well.
After that the rest of the 'Serial Howto' works as expected.

As well, with either the small or normal kernel, I have been able to resolve my earlier problems in extending the command line length, something that I could not do with the older kernel.
