Thanks for your response!

I returned to the testsite yesterday, and started out with verifying
what went wrong. And after turning ppp debugging on, I noticed the real
problem was authentication-related. I checked, and yes, there was a typo
in the chap-secrets!

After correcting this, the link came up almost immediately without any
other changes.

Now, I'm off to buy new glasses... ;-)
