I run an Asterisk VoIP server behind my LEAF (Bering-uClibc 2.2.0-b4) firewall on a NATted PC. To transport VoIP over an IPSEC or OpenVPN tunnel should work fine. It would probably be best to use QoS to give the VoIP packets a higher priority than the rest of the traffic to avoid latency as much as possible. Running * on the firewall itself should be no problem either, just make sure there is enough CPU power and RAM for the services and for VPN [en|de]cryption. But my personal motto is that "a firewall should be (only) a firewall" ;-) If you want more info about my setup, you can contact me off-list.
