Hi,

Oops, it never occurred to me to do it that way around...
I just assumed windows would not let you do that.
The NICs are 3c509 ISA cards, none of the big PCs have ISA slots.
The first time I did this, I just installed win95 on the linux box,
registered it, then removed the HDD.

The SECOND time this happened, I just NAT'ed though the Bering box and
reg'ed the MAC of the Bering box. (Don't know why this doesn't work this
time)

OK, that would neatly side-step that problem and allows me to ignore it
(I hope).

But does anybody know how I can find out why it's not working? Can I
turn logging for the DHCP conversation on?

Thanks,

James.

Hey James,

Since the registration is based on MAC addresses, you could try
popping your external NIC into the win98 box and register that way,
assuming that the NIC in question is a physical one and not on board.
Also if you have a Windows 2000/NT/XP box you could use a program like
this http://www.klcconsulting.net/smac/ to spoof your MAC (setting it
to that of the external NIC), register then start using the router
again. The same site also has instructions for changing the MAC in
Win98/ME - you can find them here
http://www.klcconsulting.net/Change_MAC_w98.htm - as I've never tried
either of these methods for altering your MAC I can't guarantee that
either will work. Hope this helps.

Upgrading of course is up to you.

Simon
