You can use the partial backup feature to make backups of your configuration
files (I've posted on this several times...see the list archives).  I use a
CD and put partial backups on a floppy, so I can upgrade by simply inserting
a new CD.

You can also manually migrate your particular changes to the new system,
which might be easier if you haven't modified that much of the basic
configuration.

Neither solution is "failsafe", which is likely why you didn't get any
responses to your earlier post.  Both require you understand the
configuration modifications made to your initial system, and how to apply
those changes to the new system.  The partial backup method, for instance,
makes no allowance for configuration file format changes between versions
(which sometimes happens).
