The easiest way is to just insmod the specific modules on the command line
(in the same order you add them in /etc/mdules). Also take a look at the
modules.dep file in the kernel tarball, all dependencies are listed there.

You can workaround the scrollback buffer by using a ssh client (with its
own buffer) or a terminal client when you connected through the serial
port. You can also temporary disable the startup of shorewall (that is if
you're _not_ connected to the internet) which will give a lot less output
with startup.
