Hello Paul, I don't have it running but maybe I can give some hints.
The pptpd is built with libwrap support, so you need to make sure /etc/host.allow and host.deny are correct (this won't explain a segfault ofcourse..) On user request I added the pptpd-logwtmp.so library, in /usr/lib/pptpd. It's enabled in pptpd.conf with the keyword "logwtmp". You could try to disable that option.
