I just received a reply from a collegue who has been helping with this - he 
found an answer via google.

The correct syntax is apparently to prepend the VPI/VCI with 0 or 1 for example.

So the call becomes...

        plugin pppoatm.so 0.0.38
Or
        plugin pppoatm.so 1.0.38

...for my situation.

Useful to know.

Sorry to ask the question then immediately find the answer, but isn't that 
always the way it happens!
