Looks like something is there, but it's not responding as expected. Are 
you sure your harddrive hasn't died (well, I mean, has it worked in the 
last couple of weeks, like during a reboot)?
Did you do something to make the harddrive to to powersave mode (using 
hdparm, for example)? If so, you might have to wake it up before it will 
respond. That's the only thing I can think of right now, other than a 
dead or corrupted drive.

Maybe somebody else has some insight.
