Thanks for the attempt, Eric.  There should be a way to build
NISTnet without the X interface.  From what I can find there 
used to be a text-based interface for starting it up, and it
still has the command line interface.  Cisco used to distribute
a CD with Red Hat Linux 3 and NISTnet, and their instructions
are completely text based.
