Sorry for the late reply, I was away this weekend. Glad you sorted it 
out.

To answer some of your questions:
makedevs lp c 0 0  2 creates a couple of devices (two), mknod only 
one. 
The root.dev.mk file is part of initrd.lrp, in Bering-1.x times it was
indeed part of root.lrp.
