Ok. After doing some research it appears that windows/dos line feeds were added to both leaf.cfg and syslinux.cfg when the files were uploaded from the router to the windows system. The program used for this was winscp400. I was able to remove them with a windows editor called edit pad lite that has a feature that allows the file to be converted from windows cr/lf to Unix lf only. The files were only uploaded never edited on the windows system so I don't see how the files got changed.
