Are you sure your kernel module was loaded at that point in time? Just because /dev/sdbX exist does not mean there's a kernel module listening behind them. What happens if you start "fdisk /dev/sdb" ?
Have you tried attaching a CD / DVD drive and booted a rescue system or a live Linux system (e.g. *ubuntu, Fedora Live CD, etc.)? Does it work with them? When loading the module for your card does it report on these distributions also the I/O errors about /dev/sdc, etc.?
