Makes sense. When I googled for the error messages I was seeing from ifup and ifdown I got Busybox bug reports. I don't know if it matters, but the only thing unusual about my setup is that the interface being configured via dhcp is eth1 rather than eth0, so it's not the first one handled. It's on a WRAP box: all three use the same (natsemi) driver.
