Basically No, the missing battery just requies an initial connection to
an ntp server to initiate the system time.

Do you have a pppoe uplink? If so, I have experienced these to be
sufficiently slow to provide an address to the interface that the ntp
cannot find a server.

Solution.... it depends. I don't use openntp but plain old ntp with it's
control program ntpq, which I use to wait for ntp to finally connect and
get a decent system time. With your platform being ALIX you are not
restricted by space, so this should not be a problem for you.
