Thank you, the culprit was rfkill. I obviously got problems with the
automagic module loading, somehow it is just too much magic for me.

somehow led-class and ecb don't show up on my lsmod, but then.....

I am trying to build a _real_ wireless router, a device which uses a
wireless uplink and another wireless local network. Each with its own
SSID, frequency and IP range. I tried to solve this in a first attempt
with two off the shelf devices, but those are just not flexible enough :-(

So expect other noise
