It's a dynamic redirect. <http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/now.png> redirects to <http://c.xkcd.com/redirect/comic/now>, which redirects to a URL of the form "http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/now/HHhMMm.png";, where "HH" and "MM" are digits specifying a time of day, in UT+12h, rounded to a multiple of 15 min.
