I do project based expense reporting, and have fought with different
method of tagging. Ledger 3.0 introduces the ability to attach
metadata to transactions in the form of user specified key/value
pairs, and I am in the process of updating my ledgers to use this feature.
Here is an example of my "old" 2.6 data:

I am putting "metadata" in the form of an expense report number
(AISER0033) and a receipt image in the payee field, and encoding my
project in an account.
I would then use -l '//AISER0033/' to search for transactions by
matching text in the payee field, or by looking at the project
accounts.
Now with 3.0 the same transaction looks like:
