Minor annoyance with emacs mode

I use Aquamacs on OS X.  When I use the ledger-mode facility for adding
entries, ledger-mode inserts the entry without the most significant digit.
For example:

011/11/15 Bountiful Baskets
    Expenses:Groceries                        $16.50
    Assets:VWCU:Joint Checking

Which requires hand correction.

Does anyone else see this?  I am trying to figure out whther it is a local
problem.
