Craig, the OP specifically ruled out Emacs. As for me, I have rolled my own script for entering some repetitive transactions. I tried using the C preprocessor but then it doesn't support macros that expand to multiple lines, so I dropped that. It might be a good idea to try other macro processors or template engines like m4, freemarker, etc.
