The thing that is spooking you is trying to demonstrate how the "bucket" and "apply" commands work. At line 72 you see the command "apply account Expenses", this tells ledger to stick "Expenses" in from of every posting account. The "bucket Assets:Checking" at line 73 command tells ledger to automatically balance any transaction to the "Assets:Checking", but since the apply command was already in effect it prepended Expenses to the line.
